What Is Page Rank?

By: Kimberly Bodane
Page ranks are defined numerically, from 1 through 10 - 10, being the highest. Very few pages have a page rank of 10, and anything above a 6 is considered very good. There are many factors that determine a page's rank, but the main variable seems to be based on how many websites link to your page. The higher page ranked sites that link to your site, the better. In other words, 10 links to your page from high ranking sites like CNN.com, Yahoo.com, etc, will easily outweigh five times that amount of links from unknown sites with low page ranks. And, just to make it trickier, the amount of "credit" your site gets from incoming links, is also divided by the amount of sites you link OUT to.Equally important, is your site's actual content. It needs to be information that people can use and take active interest in. Having content that matches your keywords should also go without saying. Why Is This Important?Page rank is extremely important, in that it determines how high you get on search engine results. And just as it's helpful to have your incoming links be from reputable, trusted, relevant sites, your outbound links will also be more valuable to those pages you do link out to. This is important when negotiating for link exchanges with other sites. The higher your page ranking, the more desirable a link from your page will be to others - Including those willing to pay for said link. Are There Ways To Generate Better Page Rank At No Cost?Absolutely! To follow are some of the simplest steps you can take.Build more pages: The more pages your site has, the more content it is generally considered to have. If your site only has 3 pages, the maximum page rank would be a 3. Make sure to have at least 8 relevant pages including the main page, in order to have a healthy amount of content.Avoid Dead-end Links: Let's say you've worked real hard to get 8 good pages. Your page rank ideally has the potential to be a page rank of 8. However, if half those pages are not leading anywhere, you've got a problem. When the search engines "crawl" your site, they want to go from one page to the next. You can have a really great page, but if it has no other link on it to go somewhere new, it will be considered by the spider to be a dead-end page, which will hurt your site's page rank. Make sure every page has a door out, other than a back button (which to the bots, will generate the equivalent of a good old "Nothing more to see here" type statement). Combat this by making sure you at least have a link back to the index - or better yet, a site navigator at the base of each page with choices between the main pages of your site (ie. FAQ, About Us, Contact Us, etc). Again, these are pages that add convenience to your human visitors as well.Create Internal Links: Remember to make links to yourself whenever relevant. For example, on your About Us page, don't just mention your online ordering system - hyperlink to the page where your visitor would need to go in order to begin an order. Not only are you creating another link for the crawler, you're also making it convenient for your guest to find that page right then and there, if they so desire.Utilize Free Directory Listings: They may not always be big high ranking sites, but they are an easy way to get your name out there. You never know when someone might end up using one, and thus find you in the most unexpected of ways! How To Generate More At Cost: Getting a high ranking site to link to you isn't always the easiest thing to do. Sometimes it is necessary to buy that privilege via ads. There are literally 100's of different options to choose from, however the most effective method these days is by purchasing text based links to your site. For the largest comprehensive list of quality paid link directories along with page rank statistical information visit: http://www.helpmyhits.com/paid-web-directories.php Some tips to stretch you advertising dollar as far as it will go would be linking to different pages of your website (not just the index) and also using different keywords in those links. As you can see, page rank is a very real and vital aspect of web development that should always be kept in mind. Without it, your chances of being found easily on search engines is compromised. With it, you'll be on your way to a highly successful website.

Free SEO keyword analyzer tool!

By: steve bis
This article is about a free website which has a great text analysis tool, that is very useful for anyone in the internet marketing game or who optimizes their website for search engine rankings. The sites address is www.textalyser.net this tool really does the job when it comes to analyzing either all the text on a website or just a certain portion of your choice. Giving you all sorts of great information about the keywords used in the site. When you first enter the site you can either paste in a certain portion of text into the designated area, or you just type in the URL of the whole website you would like to have analyzed. Then you can choose as to what analysis options you would like to perform. Such as the minimum characters per word, whether you would like it to ignore numbers, and a few more. After you chose your options then you simply click analyze the text, thus returning you a complete very detailed analysis. At the very top of your analysis it shows some basic text information like the total word count, number of different words used, sentence count, a readability index ranging from easy to hard. That little function comes in handy, because you definitely want the text of your page to be easy for the viewer to read. The next and perhaps most important feature, shows you the occurrences and frequency at which the top keywords for your page show up. It ranks them from the number one word to whichever number you would like it to stop at. That is set at the options you chose before you analyzed the text. This particular feature is very nice to SEO's, seeing as that it lists the top words on a site and the density/frequency of which they appear. So an example of how this might help would be if you were targeting to have a certain keyword density for a particular keyword on your site. Thus enabling you to figure out whether to add more or less of that word to meet the density at which is required for the search engines to list you for that keyword. Not only does this tell you your top ranking keywords it tell you the top word phrases, ranging from 2 word to 5 word phrases. It gives the count of how many times that phrase was used and also shows the frequency compared to the rest of the text on the page. Anyone who is in the internet marketing field especially marketers who optimize their websites for search engine traffic can make great use of this free tool. I personally find great use in this tool for the process of my keyword research, which is essential for any search engine optimization campaign.

SEO- 9 Ridiculously Easy Steps to the Top 10

By: Murry Daniels
Search Engine Optimization companies are making a fortune by doing the menial work that is overlooked by many designers. It is ridiculously easy to do most of the work done by most SEO companies, all you have to do is create good habits. There are 9 main points you should focus on:• Keywords• URL Text• Description, Meta tags• Title tags• Image Names• ALT tags• Heading tags• Content• HyperlinksThe focus of these 8 steps is to load your pages with as many "keywords" as possible.KeywordsKeywords are the most important aspect of good SEO, this is where you tell the Search Engines what your site is about. Search Engines use an algorithm to determine the "Keyword Density" of your site, this formula is:Total Words ÷ Keywords= Keyword DensityUse this formula on your competitors web site and see how they score, then aim to beat that score.Choose keywords that best relate to the information, products or services that you are offering. For instance, if I am designing a site about "Web Design", I want my site to include the words "Web Design" as many times as possible. However, most people don't just search for just one word, they type phrases, so you should consider the phrases that best suit your sites target market. For example, if I am creating a site about "Web Design" in New Orleans, I would include "New Orleans web design" in my keywords. Another way around this is to not separate my keywords with commas, just use spaces, and the Search Engines will make the phrases for you. The most important thing to remember is that the content of each page is different, so only use keywords pertaining to that page.URL TextWhen you name a new page you have the option to call it anything you could possibly think of, why not se a keyword? After all, the URL address is the first things a search engine comes across when indexing your pages. You have to remember content doesn't come easy to everyone, so you gotta slip in your keywords when the process gives you an easy one.Description Meta tagsThese tags are dwindling in importance since Search Engines are now looking at content, but every little bit counts.Optimize your meta tags to match your content, products, and services, and the Search Engines that still look at meta data will reward your efforts.Title TagsTitle tags are the tags that tell the Search Engine the title, or formal description of the document or page. This is the word or phrase that is seen at the top of the browser window. The most important rule about title tags is, don't put anything in the title tags but keywords. Once again this is an easy time to slip in your keywords, so don't miss out.Image NamesAs I said before, content doesn't come easy to everyone, so slip in your keywords whenever possible, this applies to image names. If you are saving a picture of a guy working on a computer for your web design web site, don't call it "some_dude.jpg", call it "web_site_design.jpg". The Search engine will look at the code for the site and see the image pertains to the content of the site and this will be another relevant element on that particular page. You have to take the easy ones when you are given a chance.ALT tagsAlt tags are keywords that you can attach to images, giving more weight to the image since Search Engines can't analyze the content of the image itself. Here is a chance to slip in more keywords without writing great content, use it.Heading tagsHeading tags are associated with the bold font that leads into a section of text. Like this:Web DesignWeb Design Inc. offers custom web site designs... Your heading tags should only be keywords, and should be presented in the order that your Meta tags follow. H1= first meta tag, H2= second meta tag... Try to utilize all 6 heading tags on each page to ensure maximum page optimization.ContentAs every expert will tell you, "Content is King." Each web page should have at least 350 words on it, and the more the better, but keep in mind the formula for keyword density. You don't want to fill a page with 1500 words of jibba-jabba and only 5 keywords in it. Some people get hung-up on how browsers display text, and use images with text in them because they want a cool font, but browsers can't read the text embedded in images, so this content ads no weight to the page in a Search Engines eyes. Linkbaiting is the new trend among high ranking sites. Linkbaiting means writing quality content, or articles that other web sites can display on their pages as long as they give credit, and a link to your site. You don't have to be a vi or emac expert to write good web content, just be thoughtful of how you word things and incorporate your keywords.HyperlinksHyperlinks are text links to other pages on your site. The rules of SEO and hyperlinks are easy:• Use hyperlinks so the Search Engine will have a text link to follow to the next page• Don't use one word links, use long link phrases, preferably keyword phrases• Use bullets, or some sort of small image that you can attach an ALT tag to, this will ad more importance to the link, and throw in a couple of free keywords for you.Keep these 9 aspects in mid when designing a site, and you are sure to have a leg up on the competition.

Cold Weather Tips For The Laptop

Cold Weather Tips For The Laptop

The cool breeze and the tiny rain of snow during the winter season may be a delight to a lot of cold-loving people; it is definitely not a thrill but quite a chill for laptops. Electronic notebooks or more popularly laptops have been made to work in the regularly safe temperature which ranges from 10 to 35 degrees in Celcius or 50 to 95 degrees Fahrenheit. If you should get a shiver, you can always go to the fireplace and get warmed up in front of the warm logs. However, your laptop could not afford to do the same so here are a few tips that can guide you in keeping your notebook safe and warm.If you live in one of the world's cold regions, it may be best that you purchase for yourself a ruggedized laptop that can sustain cold weather for longer periods of time. These kinds of laptops may be a little expensive but it will be well worth it as they can be counted on even under extreme cold weather conditions. The ruggedized laptops had been duly tested and have passed the MIL-STD-810F standards. If you cannot afford a ruggedized laptop, the second option may be to invest in laptop warmers which by their names have been purposely designed to keep your laptop warm.Remember what mom always told you and stay out of the cold. As much as possible get shelter away from the snow so it is a big no-no to spend so much time outside while you are carrying your laptop even if it is placed on a bag as it could still accumulate moisture and anything wet could do a lot of damage. After being out from the cold, let your laptop breathe in and out before turning it on. Give it time to adjust to the room temperature first. This goes the same if you open your laptop outdoors, outside but out of the snow of course. Mug or pocket warmers do not work their charm on laptops but could actually backfire for you. These things were not specifically made to warm up laptops so do not use them as such.Placing your laptop on the trunk of your car is a bad idea even if it is ensconced in a well insulated and padded laptop case because the cool air could very well manage to freeze it. This stays true with the use of heating pads as well. The laptop will warm on its own so give it time. When this happens, the laptop will surely be damaged and it follows that you will lose all your saved information and data. If you think it may be a good idea to use the laptop even if it is inside the laptop bag, think again. This is not recommended as air could not circulate very well in the little room offered by the laptop bag and as a result heat will build up. And do not suppose that you can make up homemade devices that can help keep your laptop warm. Your creativity may be a cause of damage so it would be better to go for those devices that have been tested and have passed known and established standards.

Why Is Windows Vista Slower Than Windows XP?

Why Is Windows Vista Slower Than Windows XP?

Many people are taking the leap and upgrading their pc operating system from Windows XP to Windows Vista, only to be very disappointed by the distinct slow-down in performance.Anecdotal evidence suggests that Windows Vista requires twice the computing power and resources to operate at a performance level similar to that of Windows XP. So what can you do to improve this?Firstly, it may be worth considering if you need to have all of the Vista bells-and-whistles that are turned on by default. The Aero interface in particular, although it looks pretty, requires considerable resources and it's worthwhile turning it off to see how much general performance improves. In addition many computers from manufacturers such as IBM come with a whole suite of ancillary support programs which you may not really need, such as firewall programs, antivirus programs, performance monitor programs, etcetra. Third party firewall programs in particular can use up a lot of resources. If you've been happy with the built-in Windows Firewall, then consider turning off any third party ones. The other two areas where a significant improvement can be made is by upgrading the amount of system ram or memory, and utilising a ReadyBoost compatible flash drive or flash card.Upgrading system memory is very straight forward. Manufacturers like Kingston make third party ram to the specifications of the big OEM's like IBM, HP, Dell, Acer, Apple and others so it's not necessary to pay hefty prices to obtain a 100% compatible ram upgrade. Kingston also guarantee their memory for life so even if the reseller you purchased it from closes up ship you can go back to Kingston for any warranty-related issues.Upgrading system memory as high as your budget will allow is recommended, although anything higher than 4GB with the 32-bit version of Windows Vista is pointless, as it will generally only recognise around 3.5GB of the installed memory. The 64-bit version of Vista, however, can recognise over 8GB of memory, although most computers don't yet support this.To take advantage of ReadyBoost, simply plug in a compatible USB drive or flash card into your computer, then follow the steps to configure it using the built-in wizard. Once configured, ReadyBoost serves as an additional memory cache which can significantly improve performance by reserving part of the flash drive/card for memory management. If you are not certain about whether your pc can be upgraded with more system memory, there are many websites which make this task relatively simple to figure out. Using your favourite search engine, type in your computer brand and model followed by the words "memory upgrade" and this should give you somewhere to start. Alternatively, if you still have your user manual this should contain specifications about how many memory slots you have, the maximum memory capacity your pc can handle, and the type of memory that is compatible. To check your currently installed memory for Windows: Right mouse-click on the "My Computer" icon and select "Properties." The total memory is calculated and displayed under the "General" tab in the system properties window. For Mac: Click "About This Mac" or "About This Computer" from the Apple menu. (Far top left of the screen). This will provide information about your Mac's total memory (built-in memory plus DIMMs installed).

The laptop notebook computer is a mobile computer that is small enough to be carted and kept on the lap while working. It does not weigh more than 1 to 6 kg. It is much smaller than its elder sibling - the desktop computer. A laptop does the same functions as the desktop one and therefore the parts are the same but of mini size. Instead of a mouse a touchpad does the tracking but if required a mouse can be attached. Internet tablets are used for the vital interspace link. The laptops have both good and bad points. Due to technical and economic hurdles the unit cannot be upgraded easily. Regarding health matters the laptop is blamed for low sperm count as it is kept continuously on the scrotum that causes the heat to rise to undesirable levels in this region of the body. To avoid it the mobile unit can be kept on the desk and does not necessarily have to be kept on the lap all the time.Another obvious problem is that laptops can easily be stolen. Laptops are relatively slow and have less sound and graphics capability. Laptops are much more costly than desktops but of late the gap is closing. However Laptops consume less power. The performance is more or less the same as the desktop models and new generation models are becoming more efficient and user friendly. How can such a small package hold such varied capabilities? Laptops and desktops run on the same principles but the difference is how the components are fitted and fixed. In a desktop there are motherboard, video card, hard drive etc. The monitor, keyboard and other incidental items are connected without wires or with cables but there is sufficient space for extra cards, cables while allowing for flow of air. In a laptop the screen and keyboard rests on the side of the box. The design of the laptop is small and flat wherein all the pieces fit in snugly. Thus the space is compact allowing for conservation of power and less production of heat. The CPU is the brain of the computer and a fan and heat sink system with plates and channels are required to cool it. But a laptop runs on a lower voltage resulting in less speed. Instead of pins and socket as in a desktop, in a laptop balls are used. However it means that the processor cannot be removed separately. The batteries of laptops that run fast suffer from being frequently run down. The Apple G4 processor tries to neutralize this defect. Laptops use mini sized fans, heat spreaders and heat sinks. Some use liquid coolants to keep down the temperature. The CPU`s of the laptops are placed near the edge of the box allowing for hot air to be released without flowing over other components. A laptop also has a hard disk drive wherein is stored the operating system, data and application files. The mechanism of memory differs from one laptop model to another. Usually smaller memory modules are used to economize on space. Both run on electricity but a laptop can also function on batteries. Every invention begins with a dream. In 1970 Alan Kay of Xerox had such a vision of a portable computer approximately the size of a notebook. He never went much ahead with the idea but set the balls rolling. In 1979 the first working portable computer was made by William Moggridge of Grid Systems. Others like Apple soon jumped in to complete the success story.

Hardware and Software requirements for VoIP
By: Kristen Kiya

Voice over Internet telephony has changed the way we communicate. The innovative, flexible and scalable solutions have engineered a revolution of sorts in the present day world. The concept of virtual area codes can be mentioned in this context. VoIP users can opt for this service and select an area that is distinctly different from where they live. They can then enjoy facilities such as unlimited long distance calls to friends and family members living in that area code. This way, they are able to save money while connecting at different levels with the people who matter. This is another area wherein the VoIP solutions have scored over the traditional phone services. Businesses can also make the most of this high-end technology and use it to their advantage. They can, for instance, think about enhancing their scope and areas of operation, by floating local numbers in potential markets. It is quite evident that they would be getting more leads due to the low costs of local calls. When the number to be called is a local one, more people from target market segments are expected to call in. The point is that the VoIP market is more than ready for the best of products and services. The only thing is that certain conditions need to be met for the successful implementation of this innovative technology. For instance, a computer with a high speed Internet access is a must-have. The computer should be updated with audio and video codes. This ensures that the persons using the VoIP products and services are not disappointed with the quality of the audio as well as graphics. Another pre-requisite is that the digital video compression format should also be present in the computer that is being used. Moreover, another important requirement is the telephone adapter, which is often delivered by the voice over IP service providers, as an integral part of VoIP packages. As a matter of fact, this VoIP hardware is indispensable for converting the household phone into one that can be used for making Internet enabled calls. Most important, the hardware and software of VoIP that are needed for the successful running of IP solutions have to be implemented properly through a proper procedure of software installation and hardware activation. Quite a few service providers are currently present in the market which can help end users to get initiated. As a matter of fact, due to the many choices that are available, it often becomes difficult for potential users to zero in on particular service providers. In this context, a VoIP requirements list becomes indispensable. It is preferable that potential users should go for VoIP wholesalers or resellers that have established themselves well in this domain. The quality of services also becomes important in this context. It is quite natural that potential users would want to get the most for the money that they spend. So, it is quite evident that they would check out the features and costs of the VoIP solutions and services on offer. They would then be able to match the same with their requirements and select solutions that best satisfy their needs. Certain parameters that need special attention include the financial stability of the company, the technical support that the company offers, and last but most important, the overall voice quality.

PC phones - Ensuring cost efficiencies in communication
By: Angela Hayden

The business of VoIP telephony is getting interesting by the day. On one hand, new and innovative solutions are coming up that have made long-distance communication more personal while on the other hand, more and more users - both corporate and individual - are shifting their focus to this domain thereby building up a demand for further innovation. Entrepreneurs are now making the most of this opportunity to sell PC to phone services to end users. It can be said with a lot of conviction that PC to phone solutions are no longer limited to a selected few. Analog phones are no longer in use, and even mobile phones are now facing tough competition. The new player in this segment is the PC phone - which is being preferred due to its ease of use and low calling costs. Long distance and international calls can now be made at a lower cost using PC phones. As a matter of fact, using a personal computer for making cheap long distance calls is quite an innovative idea that entrepreneurs can cash upon. After all, who would not want a VoIP PC to phone service that can be used to make cheap long distance phone calls? This is all the more true for people having friends and relatives in different parts of the world. Thus, it can be rightly said that a more than adequate demand exists for these solutions. Moreover, several service providers have come up that offer VoIP based broadband phone services to the end users - who could be either individuals or institutions. Corporates with a futuristic vision and the desire to enhance their scope of operations are making the most of these offers and venturing into the profitable business of IP telephony. The VoIP platform providers ensure that users are able to make long distance calls anywhere in the world. The instant delivery of solutions guarantee the much necessary freedom to end-users, which in turn open up a whole new domain of business possibilities - waiting to be explored. And when these high end capabilities are matched with cost efficiencies - then the end users have nothing more that they could wish for. This revolutionary PC to phone communication technology is thus leaving an impact. So, whether it is for enhancing organisational communication or making more direct contact with end users and customers, PC phone solutions are benefiting the industry in more ways than one.

The Pros And Cons Of A Laptop
By: Roberto Sedycias

A laptop, also called a notebook, is a small mobile computer. Depending on the size, material used for manufacturing it and other factors, its weight ranges from 1 to 8 kilograms (i.e. 2 to 18 pounds). The source of power is usually a single main battery, or an external AC/DC adapter is used. Apart from supplying power to the laptop, it also charges the battery. To avoid havoc in case of power failure, a 3 Volt cell is provided to run the clock and other vital system processes. Though laptops are equally capable and powerful as desktop computers, they are much more expensive than similar capability and configuration desktop computer. Size is the unique property of a laptop. The components used in both, laptops and desktops are the same in terms of the functions they perform, but the components in laptops are miniaturized and made to support efficient power consumption. LCD (Liquid Crystal Display) is usually the technology used for the display screen. They have a built-in keyboard and a touchpad as input devices. Provision is also made for connection of external mouse, and even keyboard. Apart from the advantages like compactness and mobility, a set of disadvantages has also been associated with laptops.A huge amount of discrepancy is observed when it comes to standardization issues of laptops. There exist worldwide standards for form factors of the peripherals and add-in PC cards used in a desktop computer. But no such standards are as yet enforced for form factors of laptop internals. Electric voltage, motherboard layouts, internal adapters used in connecting the hard disk, optical drive, LCD cable, keyboard and floppy drive to the main board, all still face issues with standardization. These hits hard on the poor user who is uneducated in this relevant field. Apart from them, a bit of difficulty may also be faced by the repair technicians. Familiarization of different parts and hardware that perform the same function is important. As an outcome of the improper, or all most no standardization, the laptops suffer compatibility problems too. Most of the times, it is not possible to use one manufacturer`s components in the laptop produced by another manufacturer. The reasons behind this can be assurance of product stability, prolong product lifetime, and to avoid dubious warranty issues. Some manufacturers provide the laptops with a set of ports to let the user connect the hardware that he wants to use.Upgradation of a laptop is another issue. Due to both technical and economic reasons, it is limited. Due to the proprietary designs of the laptops by each manufacture, it is difficult to upgrade them and most of the times even repairing is a costly affair. The standard peripherals, like audio, video, USB, 1394, Wi Fi, Bluetooth, are integrated in the motherboard. Upgrading these thus requires either of external ports, card slots or wireless peripherals. As far as the memory units and batteries are concerned, they can generally be upgraded according to the user`s needs.

Email

The changing attitude of the facebook generation towards email
By: Alex Fenwick

It wasn’t too long ago that social networks didn’t exist. You actually had to speak to one another, in person. The quickest, cheapest (and well, best) way of keeping in touch with people who had moved away was via the old and trusted method of email. No longer is this the case. People don’t want to speak to one person anymore; they want the whole world to know that they’re staying in and having Spaghetti Bolognese for dinner tonight.Tonight’s dinner aside, this is something which needs to be paid attention too. I have read blogs recently from people who are saying that they are turning back to email in protest to social networking and stating that email is still king. These people also happen to be in the email marketing field. Unfortunately, the world of email marketing can’t exist just because there are stubborn email marketers out there who are refusing to change over. Email marketing will still work with the younger generations; we just have to remember that the concentration on their inbox is probably going to be considerably lower than the older generations of email users.I’m lucky enough to be in a situation where I a) have brothers and sisters who are full social network addicts; and b) Am at an age where I once used email and converted to social networking, so have knowledge of my own changing attitude towards email. So when are the younger generation going to use their email inboxes? I read somewhere that 91 off - end of season sale. I basically don’t want lots of content; I want deals and plenty of them. I also pay absolutely no attention to emails that have come from 3rd party sources so being on an email list is pretty pointless with me.Now I know I’m only using a very small group of people as my test subjects (me, my family and close friends) but there was a general consensus that this was the case with the rest of them as well. What’s even worse is that the emails I do actually bother to open are what I advise our customers not to do in terms of design. They are just one giant image with clickable links in the image itself. This has led me to think that content filtering will become even less important in the future of email deliverability and that emphasis will be further placed upon whitelisting and sender reputation. Why not also consider when these recipients are most likely to concentrate harder on their online email accounts. Working hours are probably the best time to send your email marketing campaigns. As most work places have blocked facebook and myspace, the concentration will have shifted towards email during working hours (providing that email hasn’t also been blocked), especially seeing that you can actually view facebook posts from your email account now.So the future for email marketing will pretty much stay the same in all honesty. A few things will have to change. I can see the lure of buying or renting lists diminishing in some areas of the business world as the effectiveness of them decreases. I can also see us stepping back a bit in terms of content and design. I think people have already, and will continue to care less about the content and how they word their emails and focus more on the sending reputation they carry.I would love to hear your thoughts on what I’ve said. Whether you agree or disagree, it’d be great to let me know what you think.

Five Tips for Opt-In Marketing
By: Landon Wisser

What is "Opt-In"? Simply, the term "opt-in" refers to emails that have been requested by the client receiving them. Opt-in emails are typically newsletters that target a specific audience and provide information about current sales, services, or promotions. Unlike the often annoying and dreaded spam emails, opt-in emails are only sent to individuals who request them. Why use Opt-In Marketing? Using email newsletters is an effective, efficient, and inexpensive way of communicating your latest marketing materials to your potential customers. Email newsletters are also useful for obtaining valuable information about your prospective patrons. Whether you're selling a product or service, opt-in marketing will be a valuable aspect of your online marketing strategy. Tips for Better Opt-In Marketing 1.)Remember to always focus on the relationship between you and your subscribers. Every email you send should remind your potential clients about who you are, what you do, and why they should be interested in your particular message. 2.)Only contact potential clients about products or services that they're likely to be interested in. Newsletters containing irrelevant information will persuade current newsletter subscribers to possible delete or ignore your emails. 3.)The design and content of your emails should reflect your companies branding image. If your marketing materials relate to each other, each individual piece of marketing collateral works harder for you, by projecting a clear, well defined, and professional image of your company. 4.)It's also a good idea to always include a clear "unsubscribe" option in every email. Your prospective customer's ability to decline your newsletter is one of the main factors that will differentiate your email from spam. 5.)Last, but certainly not least, don't abuse the system, because you will regret it in the long run. If you place someone on your emailing list without their permission, you run the risk of criminal prosecution and you may also tarnish your company's reputation.

Top 5 Email Marketing Uses In 2007
By: Robert Burko

Email marketing experienced yet another year of explosive growth as more and more businesses around the globe have discovered how easy, affordable and effective email marketing software can be. With so many new businesses putting email marketing software to work as a key component of their marketing mix, there has been increased activity in almost every vertical market imaginable. From small ‘mom and pop' stores to large multinational organizations, email marketing appears to be filling a void that has long restricted effective targeted communication. While each different business finds its own way to harness email marketing to yield the greatest results, a few trends were clear in 2007. Even though most email marketing software solutions can be adapted to suit a variety of needs, after analyzing millions upon millions of emails in 2007, the following five tactics, approaches or uses led the pack.1. Newsletters The top use of email marketing by leaps and bounds in 2007 was newsletters. The frequency varied greatly from some organizations opting for a monthly newsletter and others using weekly, bi-weekly, bi-monthly, or even the very ambitious (for content rich organizations) daily. It remains very clear that sending out an email newsletter to your customers is a very effective communication tool. Many businesses use their email newsletter as an important brand building exercise. The more the business can keep its name (or logo) in front of customers, the more that company will be the top choice when the customer needs to make a purchase. Furthermore, by providing good quality content in these newsletters, companies can establish themselves as a leading authority on the topic.2007 also made it very obvious that the success of an email newsletter is based on the quality of the content. Businesses who tried to send out an email newsletter without really having much to say saw increased unsubscribe requests, while those businesses that provided high quality content experienced rapid viral growth. Most email marketing software solutions offer a wide variety of newsletter templates. By choosing the right email marketing software for your newsletter, your business can find a template that fits perfectly with your brand's look, feel, and color scheme.2. Special Promotions / eCouponsEmail marketing acted as a key driver of new sales in 2007, as companies offered special promotions or eCoupons to their mailing list subscribers. By sending out an email marketing campaign to all past customers, businesses found that special deals (whether it was a discount, free shipping, etc.) tended to cause an instant spike in sales.Since eCoupons have proven time and time again to be highly effective, most email marketing software solutions offer customizable eCoupon templates that can easily be adapted to suit any specific offer.Offering exclusive coupons to mailing list subscribers has statistically proven to increase the size of any businesses mailing list. Many offline companies have started putting signup forms near their cash registers to prompt people to sign up to receive special eCoupons. Since these consumers are already interacting with your business, and since consumer behavior studies tell us that people love ‘savings' or ‘discounts', this really is the perfect way to help put your mailing list growth on turbo.

Expand Your Multi-Step Email Marketing with Follow-ups
By: Abe Cherian

Over the years, buyers purchase many times your initial investment in email ad space. A first buyer indicates a second sale. After that, you have a regular customer that may purchase for years. The perfect scenario would be to promote the field of interest you've selected, not expanding into separate areas. Cultivating your prime customer list takes patience and testing, but you'll find it very rewarding.Perhaps you started with one product to offer, and now, wish to try another. You can run new, separate email ads in publications you have tested successfully with your other offer. And you can use your own list to send out ad campaigns for the new offer. Regular mailings depend on the number of items you have, the size of your list, and your budget. But follow through is very important.Let's say you've got a successful product, the conversion for orders are high, refunds are low, and the draw from the email ad is great. How can you generate more income, even if you think you've saturated your market? The easiest way to increase your inquiries is to run another ad in the same publication with another heading! If you're advertising in publications that are large, you might request one ad to be placed at the beginning, then switch to the end. Although several clever readers will notice the same address, it still draws a significant number of inquiries in.Email ads can be one of the best ways for you to make a high income return from limited sources. One of the best aspects of this type of marketing is the number of successes increase as the number of errors decrease. You learn as you go along while watching your profits increase.Cultivate positive thought. As you can see, there is nothing difficult, costly or extremely risky in making a great profit from email ads. What is the best way to get started?Thousands of people have earned comfortable incomes from various types of email ads for their business with Multi-Step Email Marketing. Multi-Step Email Marketing is a cost effective way for you to sell your products or services. It's also a cost effective way for you to test various offers. And surprisingly, few marketers use this marketing technique. With multi-step email marketing, you'll be selling to people who contacted you asking for information about your product or service. And you'll be building your own mailing list from people who raised up their hands and said, "I'm interested."Because you're building your own mailing list, you'll be able to send multiple offers to the same prospects. Being able to follow-up with the prospects who first asked for information from you is the key to multi-step email marketing. So, your objective with multi-step email marketing is to locate new prospects and then follow-up with an intensive email ad campaign.Let's take a look at the various steps involved in multi-step email marketing:1. You use direct response email advertising to generate leads.2. Your prospects read your ad, visits your site, responds with their name and address.3. You email your response to the prospects who called or filled out your online form.4. You send follow-up mailing to prospects who didn't buy etc...Now, let's go over each step in detail and take a look at some examples. The first step in the multi-step email marketing process is to gather leads through lead generating advertisements.Your lead generating ads should target the market most likely to be interested in what you're eventually going to offer them. The ads must state a major benefit that appeals to the readers' interests. The main purpose of your ad is to arouse curiosity and to get the reader to move to the second step of the process. (Your ad must make the reader want to know more). For best results, your email ad should offer something for FREE on your site. This is a non-threatening approach and an interested person is much more likely to respond for more information. Remember, the purpose of your lead-generating email ad is to arouse curiosity and to get the prospect to visit your site. Do not try to close the sale in this ad!You want to get prospects to rise up and say they're interested in getting more information about your product or service. This allows you to build a mailing list of people who contacted you first. Now you've got the names and addresses of prospects who has shown an interest in your product or service. Your next step is to immediately send out your email response to your prospects. Your goal here is to close the sale!Studies show that 80 in sales with your follow-up mailings. That's an additional 50% of income you would not have if you didn't follow-up.Multi-step email marketing allows you to be in front of your prospects when they move from the "not ready to buy" category to the "ready to buy" category. It allows you to build a relationship with your prospects and when they are ready to b uy, they'll buy from you.The good news about multi-step email marketing, is that you don't have to create a completely different email campaign for each additional step in the process. Just make minor changes to your initial email piece. One technique is to change the headline or the opening paragraph of your original email letter while reminding the prospect that this is their second, third or fourth notice. Or, simply place "second notice" in your original sales message. How many times should you mail? Just keep mailing until it's no longer profitable. Don't forget to factor in back-end sales and the lifetime value of your customer. Your biggest expense was getting the prospect - spend a little bit more by following-up, and watch your sales and profits soar!

Spam

Spam – the facts and figures
By: Carolyn Clayton

Spam is the result of the activities of a small number of people; however these activities are becoming a big problem for Internet users. Spammers are flooding the Internet with messages and making it increasing difficult to get on with our daily tasks and work, which involves the Internet.Spammers are not only attacking our inbox they have also started to turn on anti-spam sites. They have started to send out spam emails using the anti-spammers names, email addresses and website addresses within their spam messages. This is known as a ‘Joe-job.’ The reason as to why spammers do this is to cause trouble for the people who are fighting them and trying to stop them sending out spam messages. There are two main forms of spam present on the Internet. The one is what we all already know about, email spam, which targets individual users with direct mail messages and steals Internet mailing lists as well as searching the web for email addresses that spammers can add to their spam lists. The second popular form of spam on the Internet is not so well known. This comes in the form of Usenet spam. This is a single message that is sent to around 20 users of Usenet newsgroups. However through experience Usenet users have grown to ignore such messages as they have found that a message posted to so many newsgroups is often not relevant. These messages are aimed at ‘lurker’s,’ people who read newsgroups but never post in them or rarely post in them. By doing this spammers are robbing the user’s utility of the newsgroup as it will be overwhelmed with adverts and irrelevant posts. The submission of the name "Spam" to unwanted posts and communication originates in Chat-rooms. It was first seen in the chat-rooms of People-Link in the early 1980’s as a way of getting rid of unwanted "newcomers." When someone would enter a chat-room full of friends who were in mid-conversation, and tried to turn the conversation in an unwelcome direction, two veteran members of the room would begin typing in the Monty Python "Spam" routine at high speed. They would fill the screen with "Spam Spam Spam eggs Spam Spam and Spam" etc, and make all other communication impossible. The other members of the room would just wait until the newcomer moved on to a different room.Email, newsgroup and chat room spam is a globally growing problem with the countries that spread the most spam globally being the USA (28.4%), South Korea (5.2%), China (4.9%) and Russia (4.4%).There has previously been pressure to make email spam illegal and it has been successful in certain jurisdictions but not in all meaning that spammers merely take advantage of this fact and post more spam to places where they won’t get in trouble for doing so. Anti spammers want to see this pressure to make spam illegal more often as spam can not only waste many production hours and be really aggravating; it can also lead to criminal activity in the sense that spammers have to potential to spread computer viruses such as Trojan horses and other malicious software. There objective for doing this may well be identity theft meaning that action needs to taken against spammers and it needs to be taken now.

Tips to Prevent Spam
By: Kelly Liyakasa

Spam isn’t limited to the harmless email chain we’ve all been guilty of sending to friends and family members. Many of us feel that receiving email spam is a lost cause and we’re sentenced to cleaning our inboxes out each morning. Though completely ridding spam from your life may be an unattainable task, there are steps you can take to reduce the number you receive:• Create a separate email address (free ones like Gmail and Hotmail work great) when registering for an online group or Web-newsletter.• When posting content on the Web, don’t include your primary email address. Spammers can easily add you to their lists.• Trick the spam spiders-If you post an email address online, disguise it’s setup, spelling out ‘dot com’ in place of ‘.com• If you sign up for a list, be sure it’s for that sole site and your information won’t get passed around.• Read text-only emails or request your mail provider notify you before downloading images or HTML.• If you receive forwarded chain emails from friends or family, ask them to stop. Even if you trust who is sending you the email, your name will still be visible to whoever continues sending the chain.• Purchase a spam filter. It’s a small price to pay when you think of all the junk mail you’ll avoid.6StarReviews.com notes several spam filters that can do the trick and reduce unwanted spam mail. Anti-spam software programs like Spam Shield have unique features such as LashBack, a setting that removes spam and prevents that user from ever forwarding you junk mail again. Spam Monitor also paves the way in spam protection by letting users make black and whitelists to ensure important email reaches their inbox. Preventing spam doesn’t have to cost you your sanity!

Bayesian Spam Filters - How Do They Work?
By: Arvind Singh

Bayesian spam filters, which are a type of scoring content-based spam filters, analyze the contents of the mail, and calculate the probability of the message being spam.Bayesian spam filters, which are a type of scoring content-based spam filters, analyze the contents of the mail, and calculate the probability of the message being spam. It builds up a list of characteristics of elements that are typically spam as well as good emails. The advantage of the Bayesian spam filters is that they build up the list of characteristics themselves, and do not depend on the manually built list.Bayesian spam filters more or less try to emulate how you personally identify your spam emails. One look at an email tells you whether the email is genuine or spam. The probability that you will characterize a good mail as spam is 'zero'. Ideally, it would be great if spam filters do work in the same way. At least, the Bayesian spam filters are trying in this direction.Spam FilteringSuppose that the word 'textile' often appears in your legitimate mails, but never in your spam mails, then there is zero probability of the word 'textile' indicating spam. On the other hand, the words 'Nigeria' and 'lottery' quite often and at times most exclusively, appear as spams - made famous by the 419 scams out of Nigeria and elsewhere in Africa. For Bayesian spam filters, these two words 'Nigeria' and 'lottery' have every probability of being found in spam emails - as much as 100 percent.Whenever you receive a new message, the Bayesian spam filter analyzes it, and calculates, by using the individual characteristics, the probability of it being a spam. If it so happens that your message contains both words, 'textiles' and 'Nigeria' or 'lottery', the Bayesian spam filter cannot ascertain whether the message is a genuine one or a spam. It will further analyze other characteristics that will allow it to assess the probability of classifying the message as either, spam or legitimate.Bayesian Spam Filters - Adapting AutomaticallyOnce you have classified the message, as shown above, it can be used to further train the spam filter. This is how it works. In the above scenario:
If the message is analyzed as being spam, then the probability of the word 'textile' indicating legitimate mail is lessened.
If the message is analyzed as being legitimate mail, then the probability of the words, 'Nigeria' or 'lottery' - whichever was used - needs to be re-analyzed and re-considered as spam. The advantage of Bayesian spam filters is that they self adapt by learning from their own decisions, as well as the user's decisions - if made manually. This automatic adaptability of the Bayesian spam filters is excellent for individual email users. Most spam emails have very similar and at times identical characteristics, whereas the characteristics of legitimate mails are different for each individual.

The Basics Of Bayesian Spam Filtering
By: Arvind Singh

Bayesian spam filtering is a way to distinguish between legitimate emails and illegitimate spam emails, through a process that uses Bayesian statistical methods.Bayesian spam filtering has become a popular way to distinguish between legitimate emails and illegitimate spam emails, through a process that uses Bayesian statistical methods. It filters emails by classifying documents into categories. Based on the contents of the message in your email, the Bayesian spam filters calculate the probability of the message being a spam. They are much more robust than the normal content based filters, and their anti spam approach hardly has false positives.Normally when you receive an email, one look tells you whether the email is a spam or not. To your eyes, there is 'zero' probability of a spam looking like a good email. How would it be if spam filters, too, worked in the same way!Bayesian Spam FiltersBayesian spam filters are what are known as scoring content-based spam filters. They try to work the way your eye does in identifying spam emails, by looking for words and other characteristics that typify spams. Every characteristic typical of spam is assigned a score, and the total spam score for the whole message is computed. Depending on the type of Bayesian spam filter you are using, it may also look for legitimate email characteristics, thereby lowering the total score. The basic difference between the Bayesian spam filters and other simple scoring content based spam filters is that the Bayesian spam filters build the list themselves, as against other filters that depend on a manually built list of characteristics. You start with a sizable bunch of emails you have identified as spam, and another bunch of good emails. The filters look at both, the legitimate and the spam emails and calculate in what probability various characters appear in them. Bayesian spam filters may look at:
The words in the message body
The headers (message paths and senders)
The word pairs and phrases
HTML code, such as colors
Where a particular phrase appears (meta information)The Problems With Scoring Content Based FiltersThough the scoring based spam filters work well, they also encounter certain problems; the normal ones more so than the Bayesian spam filters. These are some of the problems faced:
The scoring content based spam filters build a list of characteristics from the spam emails and the good emails they get. For building a good list of spam characteristics, mail needs to be collected from hundreds of sources (email addresses). This may weaken the efficiency of the spam filters, as the characteristics of the good email would be different for each person.
If the spammers make an effort to make their mails look like genuine mails, the filtering characteristics may have to be corrected manually - a very big effort.
