Search Engine Optimization: Gearing Up For 2008 and Beyond
Autor: jeffwild1 ::
The SEO paradigm shift has already started kicking in. As search engine algorithms evolve, more weight is placed on trust-based factors and topical-relevance forcing marketers to sharpen up or lose their edge. Keyword density, perfect anchor text alignment and sheer volume of link equity will not cut it any more.
Mainstream Media Engagement
If marketers are working with brands that have an established off or online presence they already have a key advantage. Mainstream media and B2B publications with established trust will likely link to your website, and stimulate others to do the same through simply discussing your operations, strategies, successes and failures. This is a foot-print that's hard to manipulate. Gaining mainstream coverage can (usually) only come with an established brand presence or exciting angle. If SEO clients don't have this in place, chances are that they will be swimming against the tide.
Topical Expertise
While engaging with the wider media is important, becoming a topical expert on your field is important too. If you gain topical coverage, you will most likely gain column inches to discuss topical issues when they come up. Search engines use this linkage data to establish your trust and (in the case of topical coverage) your authority on a subject area.
Content Strategies
Gaining media coverage has lots to do with business decisions made at board-level, but gaining media coverage, and in turn editorial citations, can be pulled off through effective content strategies and relationship building. If you're already immersed in your local community it's that much easier. Publishing studies, writing a blog, and making effective software tools relevant to your industry can all help if the content hits the spot. But, if you're getting started, you might have to send emails and make phone calls to get the ball rolling. Social media can also play an important role here, if done effectively.
Link Buying
It wasn't that long ago that Google dropped to toolbar pagerank of websites selling links. This, contrary to what some people think, hasn't killed the effectiveness of link buying. It has just changed the game. Now, buy-side companies should stay clear of websites that have an obvious link-selling footprint, and they should ensure that their links are placed within content too. The most cautious of link buyers will also ensure they are not given a link that would raise an SEOs eyebrows. This means perfect anchor text, and linking to a strange page, at a strange time, shouldn't be on the menu.
On-page Relevancy Factors
With publishing strategies being more frequently used to gain link equity, ensuring the effective flow of link equity up-stream to your most important pages can play a vital role in the success or failure of your SEO strategy. Using keyword permutations, derivatives and synonyms within website copy and meta data also helps to drive relevance for a main keyword set and help clients to tackle a wider keyword basket.

Is Your PC Vulnerable on the Internet?
By: gennew3
Think about this: Is a simple antivirus application enough to protect your PC against all threats? No longer are viruses the only threat on the internet. In recent years other threats have evolved which include spyware, adware, hacking, identity theft, information theft, pop-ups and the loss of information. Let’s begin with the basics. We all need to protect our PC in the same way we protect our home, car and bank account. We wouldn’t give a stranger the keys to our car, home or bank account now would we. If you don’t protect your PC it is like giving the keys to a stranger and letting him/her have full access to your PC. Once the stranger has the keys they can snoop around and take whatever they want. I know, your thinking how can they do this, my computer is in my house and my doors are locked. Well, today you can be anywhere in the world and access someone’s computer via the internet. Since the introduction of cable modems and DSL everyone’s PC is online all the time and accessible. Why do I need to protect my PC, I don’t keep any important information on it? Ask yourself a couple of questions. 1. Do I bank online? 2. Do I shop online? 3. Do I create documents, spreadsheets? 4. Do I let other people use my PC? 5. Do I download music, files onto my PC? If you answered yes to any of these questions then your PC is vulnerable. If you bank online then you are sending personal confidential information to your bank via the Internet. For Example: Let’s say you are infected with spyware and you are typing in your account number plus password. A spyware installation can record key strokes and then send them off to a site on the internet. Now the people who setup the site have your account number and password to your bank. Here is one more example, if you answered yes to I let other people use my pc, here is what happens. The other person decides that they like this new cool piece of software. They download and double click on the exe, msi or whatever installs the software. The adware, spyware or virus installs. Now the infection is installed and now it can start stealing confidential information or cause havoc on your PC. You get onto the PC as always, since you don’t know this has happened and start doing what you always do, type documents, go to chat rooms, do your banking online, reconcile your banking with quicken and all this time your confidential information is stolen and you are completely unaware that this occurred. The million dollar question, what do I do? Well, you can follow this approach. 1. Install a Spyware application and install and configure correctly. If you already have spyware application installed make sure it is up to date and make sure that is configured properly. 2. Install an Adware application and install and configure properly. If you already have adware application installed make sure it is up to date and make sure that is configured properly. 3. Install an AntiVirus application and install and configure properly. If you already have antivirus application installed make sure it is up to date and make sure that is configured properly. 4. Install backup software, why because if something does get through your defenses or delete something by accident you always have a way of retrieving the information. You should try to backup your system at least every other day. 5. Install Encryption software. This software will encrypt files like word docs, spreadsheets, banking file on quicken. This way if someone does steal your information they will not be able to read it. 6. Install a Firewall. The Firewall can either be software or hardware based. I would install both especially if you bring your laptop with you and connect to the internet at different locations. The Firewall will block hackers trying to scan your system while you are on the Internet. Many people have these applications installed but they do not configure them correctly. Just installing the application does not mean that the application is working properly to stop the threat/infection. On some applications you need to configure the setting to make the application work the way it was designed to. Find out how to configure and install the software properly either by reading a how to book or getting someone to help. If you already have the application installed make sure it is up to date and make sure that is configured properly. All of the software needs to be up to date and kept current. As new threats are release on the internet, all applications will need the current updates to fight these threats. If you would like to find out if you’re PC is protected you can take the test. This will not harm your PC it just checks for vulnerabilities and lets you know if you passed or failed. The application is a single exe and DOES NOT NEED TO BE INSTALLED.

7 CSS Layout Tips
By: Christine Anderssen
The most difficult thing in CSS to get right is the layout of your site. Here are a couple of tips dealing just with that. Some of these tips are not exactly new, or rocket science, but hopefully they will save someone a bit of bother somewhere!Tip 1 : Clear out the default padding and margin settings before you start working. Different browsers have different default margin and padding sizes so you want to start with a clean slate, so to speak. Use this command:*{margin: 0;padding: 0;border: 0;}to clear all default margin and padding settings. Also note the border, which is set to 0. Please note that if you do this, you will also get rid of the pesky purple border round click-able images, although some people argue that the purple border is necessary for accessibility and usability. But lots of people do not like the purple border round images, and this is one way that you can get rid of it in one fell swoop without having to set img border=0 for each image (which is against the strict markup rules in any case).Tip 2 : To center your layout, use a container div to contain all your contentDeclare it as follows:#container{margin: 0 auto;width: xxxpx;}There are a couple of points here to take note of. DO NOT declare the width to be 100%. This defeats the whole object since you will just have to declare the sub elements within the container and then center THEM using margin : 0 auto. This is VERY BAD since it means that instead of declaring the central layout once, you will have to declare it in multiple places for each element within your container. Tip 3: Work from the top down Literally start working on your CSS layout starting from the top most elements in your design, as well as the 'top' elements in your HTML, such as the body, as well as your main containers.Declare your CSS commands on the highest level possible and try and declare something once only and let it cascade throughout. Only override the commands at a lower level when strictly necessary. This prevents a verbose CSS file that is difficult to maintain and understand. For example, if you have { margin : 0 auto} settings on each and every sub div within your container - you are in trouble.Tip 4 : Document what you are doing and use Firebug and the Firefox browser to debugYou are not writing your CSS code just for yourself, some day some poor sod will have to debug it. Make numerous comments inside your CSS file to explain why you are doing things in a specific way.Fitting in with this, you might find yourself having to fix someone else's CSS more often than you think (or even your own, for that matter). Use the Firebug add-on for Firefox to debug your CSS. This is a life-saver with regards to giving you an insight into exactly where your design might be broken and why.The only problem with this is that your design might work perfectly in Firefox, but not in IE5, IE6 or IE7. This brings us to the next tip.Tip 5 : Decide which browsers you are going to build your CSS for and test from the startSome purists insist on making sure that your website work for all possible browsers, others only make it work for the 'major' browsers. How do you know exactly which browsers are used the most? Once again W3 Schools come to the rescue. On the following page, you can see which browsers are the most popular: http://www.w3schools.com/browsers/browsers_stats.asp. From this page you can see that something like IE5 is only used by about 1.1% of browsers. It is up to you whether you consider it worthwhile to build your CSS to be compatible with this browser, or whether you are just going to test your compatibility with IE6, IE7 and Firefox, for example. Whatever you do, when you start building your CSS, start from the top, and test each and every setting in each of the browsers as you go along. There is nothing worse than building a perfect website in Firefox, then finding out right after you have coded a 1000 line css file that it is broken in IE6. To then debug and fix your code after the fact is a nightmare.Tip 6 : Here is an embarrassing little tip for fixing your CSS in IE6 or IE7Let's say your design works perfectly in Firefox, but is broken in IE6. You cannot use Firebug to determine where the problem might be since it WORKS in Firefox. You do not have the luxury of using Firebug in IE6, so how do you debug an IE6 or IE7 stylesheet? I often found that it helps to add {border : 1 px solid red} or {border : 1 px solid purple} to the problematic elements. This way you can often see why certain elements do not fit into the space available. It is an embarrassing little tip since it is so primitive and simple, but it works!Tip 7 : Understand floatsFloating of elements is essential to understand, especially in the context of getting your floated elements to work in the different browsers!Basically elements such as divs are floated to the left or the right (never to the top or the bottom, only sideways). Here are a couple of things to take into consideration with floated elements. Each floated element must have an explicit width specified. If you are making use of floated divs to create a 3 column or a 2 column layout, rather specify the widths in terms of percentages rather than fixed widths, and if you do use percentages, make sure that the percentages do not add up to 100%, this will often cause the right most column to drop below the rest, clearly indicating that you are trying to fit something into the available space that is too wide for it. Rather use percentages that add up to slightly below 100%, such as 25%, 49%, 24% for a left column, middle column and right column.Floating elements can be extremely complex to understand and it is worth while to spend some time on good sites that provide specific guidelines and tips, such as the Position Is Everything website.ConclusionThese CSS tips for layout should hopefully save you some time and effort when you next have to panel-beat a table-less design into submission!

Digital Signage - The Growth and Reach of Narrowcasting Technologies
By Dennis Goddard
We've all seen the proliferation of digital signage popping up in retail outlets, department stores and gas stations everywhere. You know, the ubiquitous screens that range in size anywhere from the small display screen right above the gas pump to the big, LCD monitors that overhang the aisles in department stores and big retailers, like Wal-Mart or Sears. Ever increasingly, or so it seems, we see these digital signs running messages outside store doors, in parking lots, office lobbies and train stations, between product shelves inside stores and mostly, perhaps most most effectively, near checkout counters in both small and large retailers.
It seems that digital signage is popping up wherever we, as consumers, have time on our hands while we are busy doing other things - or, even better, not doing other things. Whether it is a few minutes while we are occupied (but not preoccupied) filling our gas tank, or for many minutes - that can seem to stretch into hours - while we patiently (or impatiently) wait our turn in a medical office, nowadays it is typical that we can just turn our heads and tune into a stream of news, sports scores, financial tips and human interest pieces that entertain us, while what draws our eye is interspersed with focused advertising that delivers an advertiser's message. Welcome to the world of digital narrowcasting!
Unlike a human salesperson, digital signage is intended to be non-invasive of our privacy, or at least less invasive and more welcome than traditional sales pitches. A salesperson is not, whether welcome or unwelcome, right in our personal space demanding our attention. Rather, we are already in a space and location where an advertiser can give us the opportunity to pay attention to his or her message - or not. In turn, we are given a mixture of entertainment content and commercial messaging, and we can choose whether to be entertained by the content and listen to the advertiser's message. Alternatively, we can choose to completely ignore the "salesperson", the product and the pitch altogether.
With innovative, entertaining content planning and well thought-out positioning, most customers will actually pay attention to strategically placed digital displays, and will be receptive to the narrowcast content and messages that are delivered. The truth is that there are times and situations where the consumer craves distraction. We've heard of instances where digital signage in dentists' offices has been displayed to the patient while he is in the dental chair itself, and not in the waiting room.
Advertisers can utilize this new media to deliver older, tried-but true ad strategies. (Think of Coca-Cola's now century-old formula of "branding - putting the Coke brand name in front of the public eye irrespective of whether or not the customer is going to actually buy a soda at that time. Coca-Cola isn't particularly interested if the person pumping gas and seeing the Coke brand at the pump goes in and buys a Coke. It knows that later, at a restaurant perhaps, the person who pumped the gas will order a Diet Coke, and if they don't sell Coke's brand the waitress will be forced to ask if a Diet Pepsi will do.) But the true worth of digital signage is in the adaptability of its message to the place, situation and time where the programming is displayed. Take the checkout counter, for instance. A customer lining up at the payment counter has idle time, and a proper combination of useful information and product advertisements will focus their attention and create receptivity to the products and services being offered right at the checkout. (It is the same reasoning that prompts retailers to place chewing gum and candy bars right at a child's eye-level, so that he or she will beseech an already impatient parent to purchase gum or a Mars bar just to get through the checkout line without a hassle.) Studies confirm that the checkout counter is an area where customers are most receptive and most likely to buy impulsively. Parents are on to this, yet digital narrowcasting aimed at simplifying their lives and their shopping experience are nonetheless effective in influencing even this group to make the spontaneous, unanticipated purchases that drive up revenue.
Unlike static posters and standup displays, digital advertising software gives the customer a dynamic experience. An almost endless number of messages can be played on it. And unlike human salespeople, it never gets exhausted and does not commit the faux pas that a tired seller who has spent a tiring day with demanding customers might. Each sales pitch is delivered with as much enthusiasm as the first time. Therefore, the quality of its performance, which can be quantified and optimized, is uniform come hell, high water or demanding customers. By directing customers to what it is they are likely looking for in a particular area of a store, the capabilities of the most up-to-date digital advertising software can, in fact, soothe demanding customers by making their shopping experience less challenging,
Unlike printed materials that show the same ads for all areas of a store, digital signage is completely programmable and can follow different sequences or run completely new presentations in every section or strategic area within a location. It is even time-sensitive and can pitch different products according to time of day and the shelf-lives of products that are themselves time-sensitive. Should the competition comes up with new strategies, digital signage can quickly be reformatted to immediately respond to a competitor's marketing strategies.
Last but not the least, the presence of digital signage and narrowcasting technoiogies in-store conveys an image of a company that is modern and dynamic. In a time where change has never been so pronounced, a company that imparts an image of being at the leading edge of technology, and even pushing the envelope, sends a subtle but important message that it has the latest and best goods or services that consumers are looking for.

Computer Viruses And How They Work
By Fred Roe
If you are alive, then more than likely you have heard of a computer virus. You may not know what it is exactly, but more than likely you have heard of them, and you may even be a little fearful of these mysterious things that you've heard can wreak havoc on your computer.
This will be an overview of what viruses are and how they work, so that you can be educated about them. For right now, there are basically four types of virus terms that you should concern yourself with. They are: viruses, trojan horses, worms, and e-mail viruses.
Viruses
A virus is basically a small piece of software that attaches itself to a useful program and begins to disrupt your programs and the functioning of your computer. For instance, a virus could attach itself to something like your spreadsheet program, and every time that you run and use that same program, the virus runs itself too. It even has the chance to continue to reproduce and spread itself to other programs and create further problems.
Trojan Horses
A Trojan horse, just as the name implies, is a computer program that comes in disguise as one thing, but it really is something else. For example, you may be thinking that you have a computer program that is actually a computer game, but what it really is is a program that causes damage when you run it, possibly even erasing your entire hard drive.
Worms
What a Worm does is search for security holes in networked computers. Once it finds such a breach in the network's security system, it copies itself to the computer and then it begins replicating itself over and over again.
E-mail Viruses
The way that e-mail viruses do their damage is by traveling as an attachment to an e-mail message. It is able to replicate itself by mailing itself to dozens of the folks in your e-mail address book. And although some e-mail viruses require that you double click them to launch them, some of them don't.

How To Permanently Delete Files - The Quick, Dirty, And Correct Way
By John Cao
You may or may not know that when you drag items to the trash on your computer, they aren't permanently deleted. Just watch an episode of your favorite CSI show, and you'll see that its possible to recover files that haven't been deleted properly. And while I'm sure you're not guilty of any CSI type crimes (or are you???), I'm sure you want to figure out how to permanently delete your files and keep your private things private -- after all everyone has to have some secrets!
Why emptying your recycling bin doesn't permanently delete your files
When you tell your computer to empty its recycling bin, your operating system only deletes the records it has of the files you want to delete. Yet the files still remain on the hard drive memory.
Here's an analogy: If you think of your files as books in a library and you decide you no longer have use for a certain book. Emptying the trash is equivalent to removing the entry in the library's card catalog. The book is still there but not easily found by everyday visitors. But if someone really wanted to find it, and had a clue where to look, they quite possibly do so since it is still physically there.
What it means to permanently delete a file
To permanently delete a file, you need to not only delete its record, but also overwrite the physical portion of the hard drive where it lives. A low level format is equivalent to replacing your private file with random bits (1's and 0's). Continuing with the library analogy you need to remove remove the book, shred it, light up in flames and possibly replace it with a different book
A simple way to permanently delete?
According to Microsoft, there is a keyboard shortcut in Windows to, quote, "permanently delete files". You do this by selecting your file and hitting SHIFT+DEL. Convinced? Neither am I. What they're really explaining is a shortcut from having to move the item to the trash and then emptying the trash.
Take it a step further
Here's a poor man's version of permanent deletion. Delete your files, empty your recycle bin, and run Disk Defragmenter located in the Start menu under Accessories/System Tools. What this will do is optimize your hard drive by rearranging (most) of your files, and in doing so will most likely overwrite the files you want permanently deleted. Nice!
Do it right and do it better
While performing a defragmentation will probably do the trick, it's really not a viable solution. Waiting for disk defragmentation is not something I'd do every time I wanted to do a permanent deletion. The defragmentation process is waaaaay too long. The right way to how to permanently and quickly delete files is to use a program specifically designed for that purpose. You're in luck too because most Windows operating systems have a command line tool called CIPHER to do the trick!
Here's how to use CIPHER:
1. After closing all windows, open up a command window.
2. Type the following: cipher /w:driveletter:\foldername where driveletter and foldername correspond to the drive a location of where your deleted file used to live.
3. Sit back and enjoy your freedom and privacy while your file is truly permanently deleted!
Here's an example:
I have a picture I want permanently deleted which stored on my computer at the following location:
C:\images\scandalous_picture.jpg
After deleting this picture and emptying the recycle bin, I would type the following (in a command prompt) to ensure that I can still run for senator (as long as they don't catch me in the airport bathroom):
C:>cipher /w:C:\images
I can then move on to my life of privacy and carefree surfing!
You can do better!

Upgrading the sound from your computer doesn't have to cost a fortune, a simple set of $80 - $150 speakers will provide your with quality sound. You would be surprised with what you can get for that price.
Although I'm comfortable working with the command prompt, you may not be. No worries, there are plenty of other graphical based software tools that perform true permanent file deletion. This article gives even more compelling reasons to delete personal files and refers a graphical based deletion tool called Evidence Nuke.

Creative Search Engine Optimization - A Case Study
Search engine optimization this and search engine optimization that. You read and hear about it all day, but what about your site? While there are plenty of articles providing useful information, this article shows you how a real world example met with success. The point of this article is to emphasize creativity when approaching tough optimization situations. Problems for BusinessTaxRecovery.com In November of 2004, our firm took on the seo marketing for BusinessTaxRecovery.com. The site was being promoted through offline activities and pay-per-click campaigns. No effort had been made to achieve high rankings in Google, Yahoo or MSN. Keyword analysis revealed that combinations of the root keywords, “business” and “tax” were going to be difficult to attack. The primary problem concerned government agencies with web sites. The IRS site, for instance, had roughly 9,680 inbound links and an absolute ton of content. State agencies weren’t far behind. The California tax agency site had roughly 7,000 inbound links and, again, tons of content. For a final nail in the coffin, the client informed us the business was cyclical with the busiest months being January through April when people focused on taxes. The site absolutely had to rank highly during this period. We had two months to achieve results. Gulp! The Solution for BusinessTaxRecovery.com – 140,000 Hits After staring at a Salvador Dali painting for a few hours, we came up with a solution. It involved a combination of internal site page focus, meta tag optimization, link exchange and massive article promotion. The results produced 145,828 hits from January through April, with only 5,000 coming from the pay-per-click program. The first step was to change the focus of the site from the home page to the article page. Jumping the tax agency sites on keywords such as business tax and taxes was impossible in two months, so we didn’t even try. Instead, we decided to focus on the keyword phrase “business tax articles” and bring people into the site through the article page. Meta tags were optimized and a link exchange program undertaken. The key to campaign, however, was a strong article promotion campaign. Since taxes are confusing, it seemed obvious that an article campaign focusing on tax information would meet with success. Boy, did it. Approximately 35 articles were written, published and submitted to article directories. Since the articles were timely, they were snapped up and published. The articles produced direct traffic to the site as well as numerous inbound links because of the link created in the article byline. As for the search engines, we focused on everything but Google. We expected nothing from Google because the major content and meta tag changes would take six to eight months to show results per the usual practices of Google. In reality, it didn’t matter. The Yahoo and MSN search engines produced big time. In mid-January, the site went to number 1 on MSN under “business tax articles.” By the end of January, Yahoo was also listing it as number 1. MSN started listing it at number 1 for “tax articles” in February. The combination of these listings produced a significant amount of traffic, conversions and a very happy client. Can we go on cruise control now? No! With the end of the tax season, the traffic to the articles page of the site has dropped by 75%. Nobody is looking for tax information after April 15th, so this is hardly surprising. The promotion of the article page was simply a short-term solution to a difficult situation. While it should produce traffic during the first quarter of each subsequent year, it is not a year-around solution. Over the next six months, we will focus on the long-term goal of jumping over the tax agency sites for keywords such as “business taxes”, etc. It is going to take a lot of patience, but will eventually produce a significant amount of business for the client. Creativity is often the key to conquering seo situations. Blindly slapping up new meta tags and links isn’t always the best answer. Sometimes, a little pre-emptive consideration can yield amazing results.

The Five Steps of E-Commerce
You set up a retail business, you advertise in your local newspaper, you get customers coming into your store, and you receive payment at the cash register. Create an online store, and...How do you get customers? How do you receive payment? The concept is the same, but the steps are different. Step 1: Create your website If you don’t have web design skills, you can hire a qualified web designer to create a website for you, or you can use an online site builder. Think of it as hiring an architect and an interior decorator compared to setting up shop in an existing store. Using a web designer With the services of a web designer, you can have a unique website template and website customized to your specific needs. A web development team can also add features such as Flash headers or any programming needed for your site. If your company image is critical, a custom-designed site that conveys the right professional image is a must. Using an online site builder An online site builder is the budget way to go. With site builder programs such as Site Studio, your website can be online within minutes. A step-by-step menu allows you to choose a layout and colors, and then add a site description, a logo, and content. Your template may not be unique, but your content will. Step 2: Set up an e-commerce store Your customers will browse at your website, select some items, and then pay for them. When you set up an e-commerce shopping cart, you’re providing a way for your customers to bring their purchases to the cash register. The program you choose will allow you to enter your products in the database and allow shoppers to choose products when they click on “Add to cart” or something similar. Two well-known shopping carts, osCommerce and Miva Merchant, both allow you to do these tasks: Add, edit, and delete product categories and other information Set tax rates and charge tax Receive payment via numerous online and offline payment processing methods Bill customers And much more osCommerce osCommerce is an open source program. Store owners can set up their online stores using osCommerce with no costs involved. For small stores, it has all the features you need for an online store. Drawbacks of osCommerce are that customization is not easy, and online stores using osCommerce tend to look similar. Miva Merchant While Miva Merchant carries a price tag of $995; some web hosts offer Miva Merchant licenses with their hosting plans. If you choose Miva as your shopping cart, be sure to host your site with a host that provides Miva support. Its learning curve is steep, and it requires the support of people who know how to work with it. With the price and the steep learning curve, you get more features, and you can customize the program more. Add-in modules can be bought that perform a number of tasks. In addition, a strong support community is available in the Miva user group forums. Step 3: Get a merchant account and payment gateway When customers arrive at the checkout counter; you need a way for their payments to be transferred from their credit card accounts to your bank account. The method you choose may depend on your sales volume. For high-volume sales, an e-commerce merchant account plus a payment gateway will meet your needs. A merchant account provider authorizes the transfer of payments to your account, and a payment gateway transfers the information from your customers’ financial institutions to yours. Most merchant accounts have setup fees, transaction fees, monthly fees, and statement fees. The transaction fees are less than what you’d pay using a third party credit card processor such as PayPal. With all the fees, however, the overall cost is typically lower only if your monthly sales volume is over about a thousand dollars. For medium and low volume sales, Pay Quake and PayPal are viable options. Pay Quake Pay Quake offers three merchant account types to choose from. Although they all require payment gateways, the two smaller plans have no monthly minimums. You can upgrade to a higher or lower plan if your needs change. PayPal PayPal has become a household name. Customers can send payment through PayPal via credit card or via money that they transfer into their PayPal account. While the fees per transaction are higher than with merchant accounts, there is no setup or monthly fees, and you don’t need a payment gateway. You pay only when you have financial transactions. Fore more details about these options see WebSite Source Hosting Solutions: E-Commerce. Step 4: Create a secure payment environment A Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) certificate enables you to receive credit card information securely from your customers. When a payment page is using SSL data to encrypt data, a small image of a lock appears at the bottom right of the screen. Some web hosts offer SSL certificates as part of their hosting packages. If your web host package doesn’t include SSL certificates, you can purchase one separately. With PayPal, no SSL certificate is required. Step 5: Generate traffic Your products are on display in your newly designed store, your shopping cart is set up and ready to use, and you have everything in place to be able to receive payments securely. Now all you need are customers. This is where marketing comes in. Submit your site to search engines. Advertise your site. Keep your company name in front of your customers with a regular email newsletter. Add more content to your website to keep it fresh. Monitor your website traffic to see where it’s coming from and how you can increase traffic for key content areas.

Website Buying Guide Checklist
Can you really get a website even without knowing anything about code, and without paying a fortune? Find out. The days when websites were primarily distinguished by their code are long gone. Nowadays, the web is a true publishing medium that favors well thought-out ideas. You can get a professional-looking website online in minutes with many website building services and software. But what should you look for? What are the features you really need and which are just clutter? Content Editing Some website authoring software packages only allow you to entire plain, unformatted text. Some of them allow you to entire HTML tags. Others provide a WYSIWYG ("what you see is what you get") interface with options for font, links, and image insertion much like a word processors. Some will allow you to use more than one, or even all of these options so you have a choice on how you want to format your text. Template Designs Every website builder ever invented came with at least one or two templates for creating the graphical look of a website, so you don't have to design the look of the site yourself. But some packages have very large libraries of templates, some have only a few. Some will let you mix and match elements of the design templates, while others will lock you in to one setup. Ecommerce Functions Many ready-to-go websites created by website builder software feature built-in shopping carts. Some even come with credit card processing. This is of course necessary if you're going to be selling stuff direct online. But if you're not going to be selling anything, ecommerce functionalities may just complicate the administration of the site and pad the price for the software or service. Blogging Functions Blogs are "web logs," but blogging software involves more than just a simple online journal. Blogging technology allows you to send your new posts directly to subscribers via RSS, without them having to visit your site or receive an email from you. Still, unless you plan on updating your site regularly (at least once a month), your website's blog will just gather cobwebs. Email Some hosted web authoring systems provide email accounts at no additional charge, while others do charge separately. Some web builder systems even come with modules for creating email newsletters. Support It is very likely that you will encounter a technical difficulty at some point while owning your website. Make sure you know in advance of paying whether the company provides only paid support, and if any included support is over email, a web ticketing system, or the telephone. Photo and Image Management For many, if not most, people who want personal websites, displaying pictures online is a primary motivation, if not the only motivation. If you want to display pictures on your website, make sure to choose a website builder system that makes it easy to upload and publish images. Renting vs. Owning You can buy website authoring software upfront for a flat fee, or you can "rent;" i.e., pay a company every month to use a hosted service. The choice is up to you, but remembers that the hosted service will likely charge you much more in the end: averaging around $20/month, hosted the typical hosted website builder will cost you $240/year--far more than most desktop software. In short, you don't need to know how a website is coded to make one, any more than a book author needs to know about printing ink. Don't burden yourself with learning how to do web design. Having fun with your website starts with choosing website builder software that will make it fun.

Web Hosting & Web Development: Unravel the Technobabble and Create a Great Site
If you’ve ever browsed the World Wide Web and wondered how you could take your claim on the Internet, like the millions of others that have done so already, then web hosting can provide you with the services to do just that. The Internet is a great way of sharing information and it is possible for you to take a portion of the web and make it your own. This article introduces the term “web hosting” and provides some useful tips for web development once you’ve obtained some web space. What is the World Wide Web? The “World Wide Web” is the network of computers from all over the world that communicate with each other using the HTTP protocol, a language that allows the transmission of web documents. Be careful as this term is not synonymous with the “Internet” because it is defined as a network of networks, where the computers communicate with protocols other than HTTP. The web is what you see on your Internet browser, the web pages complete with graphics, sound and other information. All this has got to come from somewhere, and this is where web hosting comes in. Web Hosting The information that you see from your web browser is contained in web pages. These web pages are kept on computers called web servers. Web hosting is about the storage of the web pages so that people can access them. It is possible to host your own websites yourself but the reasons stopping most people doing this is that there are issues to consider with having the right hardware and software to successfully host your web pages. Your web pages will take a certain amount of space, users will need to download each page to view them and your Internet connection needs to be fast to offer good performance to your viewers. Using specialized companies that offer web hosting capabilities on their web servers will take most of these worries away from you but you will need to choose wisely and weigh up the costs and your needs. In addition to having access to a web server, you will also need to register a domain name (for a cost) that uniquely identifies your website. What Web Hosting Can Do For You The most basic service that web hosting offers is that it exposes your web pages for others to see. The other services are: email capabilities that allow for email to be received and sent from your server; database capabilities that allow for large amounts of information to be updated and accessed on the web; and dynamic content which allows for users to interact with the web pages you’ve made. Website Development Poorly designed websites will most likely turn away users and harm the credibility of the information it contains. Thought should be put in on the way it looks and the way you intend your users to interact with the content. It is also recommended for more complex websites, a structured development process should be followed. Here is a guide to the logical steps of web development: • Requirements Analysis: What is the purpose of the website? What content should it contain? • Design: How should the pages be linked? What structure should they take? How should the pages interact with the user? • Implementation: This step is the actual coding of the websites in accordance to the previous websites. • Testing: Does the website do what it should? • Maintenance: Is the information on the website up-to-date? Some useful hints for web development below are taken from software quality aspects but they apply to the development of websites as well. They are described in terms of web development: Reliability: Is the website reliable? Do faults allow for the system to continue running? Robustness: How does the website respond to incorrect input? Performance: How fast does the web page respond to user’s actions? Is it efficient in processing requests and inputs? Usability: Is the website easy to navigate and understand? Maintainability: Is the website easy to change? Can new functionality be added? Portability: What software requirements does the website require? Will this limit the amount of potential users? Understandability: How well do you understand the website you’ve developed? When designing your website, keep these quality aspects in mind as they will help you develop pages worth visiting.

How to choose the way to host your website is half of the problem, the other half is to create a website that people would want to visit and come back to. Knowledge of producing a good design can help you get the most out of your creations.
